Mat Carter grew up in a very ‘horsey’ family, his mother owning a successful riding school and livery yard, so it was a natural progression for Mat to choose a career in the horse industry. After extensive research he decided on dentistry and first attended the American School of Equine Dentistry in 1998, where he continued to travel to the states for the next 4 years, attending several international conferences during this time. In 2001 Mat sat the first British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) / British Veterinary Dental Association (BVDA) exam in order to gain his DEFRA Category 2 exemption certificate. He also helped to form the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians (BAEDT) at this time, which aims to improve the quality and training of EDTs and therefore improve the welfare of the horse. Mat served on the Council as treasurer for the following 3 years and also initiated and implicated the training courses for EDTs wishing to sit the BEVA/BVDA exams. In addition he has trained other EDTs who are now qualified and run successful equine dental practices of their own. Mat treats horses globally, but is predominantly based in Shropshire, Staffordshire and surrounding areas.
